Occupational Therapy is a healthcare profession focused on improving the functional capacity of individuals across the lifespan who experience limitations due to injury, illness, developmental delays, sensory processing challenges, mental health issues, cognitive impairments or other physical, psychological, or environmental factors. Through the application of purposeful occupations, therapeutic interventions, and environmental adaptations, occupational therapy fosters autonomy, health, and well-being, while also playing a critical role in preventing functional decline in individuals at risk.
The Degree programme, grounded in occupational science, equips students with the essential knowledge and skills to practice as occupational therapists. It offers a comprehensive foundation in human development, functional ability, and participation throughout the lifespan. The curriculum examines the impacts of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial conditions on daily functioning, while incorporating essential disciplines such as psychology, sociology, and biomedical sciences. This approach fosters a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in advancing health and well-being through occupational therapy.
The Degree also offers hands-on experience through active observation and participation during supervised practice placements, where students work alongside qualified occupational therapists in a variety of settings, including hospitals, schools, paediatric clinics, mental health facilities, and community environments. Additionally, students may have the opportunity to study abroad through the Erasmus + programme. By graduation, students will be autonomous and competent professionals fully prepared to meet the registration standards set by the Council for the Professions Complementary to Medicine in Malta, as well as other relevant professional bodies internationally.
The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.
An Advanced Level pass at Grade C or better in Biology.
During the first year of the Course, students are also required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.Requires the submission of a Police Certificate of Conduct.

By the end of the B.Sc. (Hons.) Occupational Therapy degree students will develop a range of knowledge and skills as characterised by the following:
acquire broad conceptual foundations of the profession of occupational therapy concerning human occupation, activity, participation, engagement and their relation to wellbeing;
demonstrate an understanding of a range of specific theoretical frameworks that explain human occupational dysfunction in various domains;
encompass an understanding of health, developmental, environmental and contextual factors that impact on individuals; abilities to participate in occupations;
demonstrate knowledge and skills in the implementation of different research methods and ways of devising and seeking evidence to facilitate best practice;
exemplify an ability to select and administer standardised and non-standardised tools for the assessment of human occupational dysfunction, as well as implement intervention programmes with diverse populations;
enact professional behaviour and standards commensurate with the requirements of the profession of occupational
therapy and participate in continuing education.

The degree programme will prepare you for the role of an occupational therapist for registration with the Council of Professions Complementary to Medicine and entry to the occupational therapy profession. As a graduate of this programme, you will be eligible to register with professional bodies within EU member States. Furthermore, the programme of studies is recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.
As a qualified occupational therapist, you can acquire positions in all parts of the health sector in Malta as well as overseas. You may find suitable employment within local health services, specialist health services, company health services, schools, NGOs as well as in private institutions. Career prospects are diverse, with significant opportunities for professional development and specialisation. This programme also provides a basis for Masters' level degree studies.
